Anamatic Draft

This is a draft of our animatic, we couldn't decide on the sequenece each scene will go in so we decide as a group to make a draft first then decide how each scene will go together so the movie looks better to our audience. This is is the reason our group decide to publish a draft first before making the final anamatic.

Preliminary Research

Continuity editing is when movie editor or televisions show editors use this made to make soft and smooth transactions so it doesn’t disorientate the audience so they can watch the show without concreting on editing and there are two categories in it, they are:

Temporal - This is when you connect shots to support and create a narrative .this can include flashbacks or flash forwards show the amount of time that passes and this maybe Linear progression or not.

Spatial - This editing creates unified space through the editing. shots from different angles & framing. Shot / reverse shots. also kuleshove effect this also includes something known as parrelel editing.

The 180 degree rule is a guideline which is used in film production and it is when two characters in the same scene, they must be oppsite to eachother in order for the 180 dregree to work otherwise it will not work. An example you could use a scene from batman the dark knight and see this rule being used and how you dont notice it is being used unsless you are looking for it. If the 180 degree is broken, it disorientate the audience, the audience will get confused who the character is talking to as the eyeline would change between the two character so it would look like asif they are not looking at eachother and it would look asif the character is talking to someone else each time or it be like a clip of frames just flicking from one character to the next. In the Dark Knight, the 180 degree rule was successful when there was a shot of just the joker while he was speaking but the audience can see that the joker was talking to batman becuase of the eye level matched and they looked like they were looking straight at eachother.also the way the camera switched and still made that 180 degree rule was perfect as it stil kept the same eye level all the time.

Filmography
Movie: The Dark Knight
Director: Christopher Nolan
Release date: 2008

A reverse shot is when we have an over the shoulder shot of a character which shows the other character that is opposite in the conversation. The camera then moves (keeping to the 180 degree rule) to the pan over the shoulder shot of the person who it was just focusing on and it is then moved back again to the original shot (again keeping to the 180 degree rule). The shot reverse shot is often used to show two characters in a conversation and to show there facial expressions.

A match in action shot is when a camera mostly concentrate on the action that the character is carrying out so for example a character is opening a door the camera will concentrate on the character opening the door so the action while it proceeds through out all the camera angles and movements. The image is an example of the a match in action shot in the scene.

Overall I thing continuity editing is important because editing can be really helpful in a movie; this is an important part of the movie. Editing can make the movie really interesting then it already is and can make it seem like something is actually happening and if there isn’t any editing the movie just whole scene mashed together like a montage without transaction or anything. The editing is the most important in the movie it makes the movie much more interesting then it normally is and can get the audience interested into it and make them carry on watching it so this is why editing is so important.

Developed Treatment

Setting

The setting of our movie will be the classroom of our school because our movie is based on bully and his victim and the best place bullying mostly occurs in schools so our characters will be school students. The second location to out movie will be on the roads/streets to show the victims life so basically his day to day bases life his way to school and the way to his home; we will shoot a few seconds of footage outside of house which may still count as a setting in some cases. The third setting will be the park which will be the main area of the movie because that’s where the murder of the victims happens and that the dis-equilibrium starting so when everything changes because the bullies kill the victim.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The protagonist is the main character, usually the "good" guy in the story the story mainly focuses on this character's experiences and the antagonist is usually portrayed as the "bad" guy or the person that goes against the protagonist and tries to ruin his plans. in our movie the protagonist is the vicitim who is overall 'good' guy trying to work hard in school and reach his goals and the antagonist is the bullies who are the 'bad' guys who try destorying his dreams and make his life a misery.

This is an example of a protagonist This is an exampleant antagonist

Three act structure

  • Set up – The set up is just showing the characters normal life so we will be showing the bullies and their victim’s life on a day to day basses so we will be looking at what is just a normal day for the victim from the three bully’s aspect. Then we will also look at life from the victim’s aspect to see how he feels and thinks about it all.

  • Set back – The set back will be the victim of the bullies accidently gets killed by the bullies who comes back to avenge his death as a demon, trying to kill the bullies one by one but gets carried away and takes it too far and become the bad guy.

  • Resolution – One of the bullies kills the demon by with the body of the victims by some sort of holy way that he had learnt they used to do in the past leaving one of the bullies to survive.

Binary Opposition

The binary opposition will bet something that’s gives the audience a good understanding what is happening in the movie and the reason behind it so for example if you look at powerful vs weak in our binary opposition then you’ll get the understanding of the victim who is geeky known to be weak and the popular kids to be powerful, evil and harsh at times so it would come across to the audience as popular powerful kids vs the geeky weak kid and this will then be simplified down to powerful vs weak by the audience then therefore creating the main binary opposition for our movie.

Character Type

Our character types are confusing but at the start the character that will be the victim will be the anti-hero because he is the good person but eventually turns evil so I would class him as an anti–hero in the movie and our villain who will always be classed as villain would be the bullies dues to the amount of evil and frustration they have caused the victim so they will be labelled as the villains and will be brought as villains.

Equilibrium Theory

Equilibrium – This we be start showing the characters normal live and how they live it so basically show what a normally day for each character would be so the audience gets a understands there background.

Disequilibrium – This is when the climax happens and the victim of the bullies gets killed and everything becomes unusual and the victim dead body is possessed by a demon which comes to kill the bullies changing their life.

New state – This when the killer or demon gets killed by the last remaining bully and everything goes back to normal but in a new way and a new order so everything would be different also changing the characters life and personality.

Our Characters

  • Ehsham who is the intimidating bully who overshadows Kallam in size and is physically intimidating.

  • Kashif who follows the other bullies and acts like one of them trying to be big and powerful but is weak but still bullies Kallam.

  • Farhan looks weak and small but is the main bully or gang leader and he may not be intimidating in size but is a fighter.

  • Kallam same hgh as Farhan and not very frightening, much more weak making him an easy target and the victim.

Final Choices

We have decided as a group that the choice we will be making unique decisions because we want the character to be unique epically our protagonist who will be known as the victim and killer of our movie. We will try and added contrasting things so it makes it stand out and will keep the audience involved with the movie for example the weapon that stands out and nothing similar to something a horror movie would usually use for example a knife like most horrors use. Making the setting different will be hard but were trying to get a horror setting, like a place where people would fear to go for example most people would fear to go to a grave yard alone or such so we will be starting in average life and day of the characters at school. Then the location will be outside of the school on the streets where the characters will be more expressed and will be understood by the audience much more. The other main thing would be lighting which would show the characters feeling mood or to show if they are good or bad so for example the antagonist who are our bullies will get dark lighting for the start and then the protagonist who known is our victim and killer will get bright lighting to show good but during the movie when he becomes the killer he will get dark light to show he is bad/evil.

Both characters will be unique and have a different style and stand out so the audience will understand what type of character they are and so they can understand the binary opposition to without struggling but not giving too much away. The way the characters would be unique would be depending on the clothing and the props they will be given throughout the movie. The protagonist known as the victim and the good person at the start will be dressed up with glass, smartly dressed and all prepared to work which will represent him to look like a nerd or geek and stereotype what a geek or nerd actually looks like in peoples mind so the audience will get an understanding of what his meant to by and why. The other characters will be the advisories known as the bullies who will be dressed up in fashionable clothing which is really experience showing no fright once so ever to students or teacher. This would show to the audience and get an understanding of them so they might start to think things like “they are the power in the school and play by their own rules in what they do”. These too type of character types wills show the binary opposition which in some cases will be good vs bad but if you look more detailed into the movie it will be something like powerful vs weak. These things would come a across as the binary opposition to the audience and will give them understanding what is happening in the movie and the reason behind it so for example if you look at powerful vs weak in our binary opposition then you’ll get the understanding of the victim who is geeky known to be weak which is another stereotype and the popular kids to be powerful, evil and harsh at times so it would come across to the audience as popular powerful kids vs the geeky weak kid and this will then be simplified down to powerful vs weak.

Narrative Theories Research

Narrative is when it tells you what time the story is from and what it is based around or in other words describes the sequence of a non-fictional or functional events for example if the story say "Once upon a time" this means that it happened and was based in the past which meaning it does not happen in the present time and it also makes the audience thinks this is a fictional story this would normally be used in animation movies such as Shrek.

Narrative is important in movie production because it explain the structure and meaning of the story to the audience so for example again if a movie like Shrek, it says "Once upon time" it shows the structure of the movie will be good and will contain action but good will always win over evil because it would be told as fairytale. This why narrative is important because it explain the meaning and structure of the story to the audience, the director would want you to understand.

Equilibrium and dis-equilibrium theory will be use the start of our movie before thosae are the main things that normally happening opneing in the movie. If our movie was not just the opening all three theory would be used but the dis-equillbrium is the main one in the opening and it would be the main one if we did a whole movie. The reasoin I say that dis-equilibrium will be the main used in the opening is becuase in horror movies the equilibrium does not last long take in for example parnormal activity, that equilibrium only last a few minutes into a movie and then goes to the dis-equilibrium. we are doing a horror so the dis-equilibrium will be the common one in the movie.

The three narrative theories are equilibrium, dis-equilibrium and new sate of equilibrium and all of these all have different and opposite meaning so the meaning for equilibrium is when everything is normal and is something that usually happens in the movie or story. Dis-equilibrium is when everything changes because of an event that has happened so everything is different and unusual and then the last one is new sate of equilibrium which is wanna everytrhing strarts new and everything is normal and nothing usual is happening so for an example of these three for Shrek would be:

Final cut introduction

We recorded a a blue screen shot, which we rolled play in of seeing the white house being blown up. This was then recorded and we were then going to put it into final cut to edit it and add in the blue screen shot but we experienced difficulty with the footage. The problem was that the file we were trying import is not supported by Final cut so this took 15 minutes or more to sort this problem out. We will be now converting the final type to a compatible format of final cut, this preferably will be FCE as i have seen on the forms because other people are having a similar problems.

Link to form - http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?/topic/99712-final-cut-express-wont-open-an-mpeg-file/

This Problem will hopefully be sorted soon so we can be back to work so we can get back to editing so we can learn how to use software correctly and properly in future works, this problem will hopefully not occur again because we know what format the file must be now.

Audience research

Audience research is important because you can see who you should be realising your movie and you will have certain concepts before you release it so for example I will do audience researcher whilst the planning of my movie and will see who I will be aiming it and why the particular audience. The audience is mainly categorized into age and gender to most movies, this what most producer categorize there movie in too. These categorizing your audience can really help with the development on your movie because then you could add stuff to the movie which you know will keep you audience occupied and interested. Some people would call demographics stereotyping because people are put in to categorise by their looks or how they think.

The hypodermic needle, two step flow and reception analysis is what I think is the three main theories that would be important to a movie. The hypodermic needle would be used to put a message into the audience and make them believe in it so it scares them for example paranormal activity mentions spiritual being are real and can kill you without you seeing them making the audience believing in it to scare them. The two step flow is used to spread the word of the movie so for example again if I watched paranormal activity it would make me talk about if the movie was good and I would basically explain why it is good and why people should watch that’s why the two step is another main theory for movies, it helps make the movie gain more popularity. The last one I think is a main theory to me is reception analysis because movie producers can send out a movie having one aim but people will see that aim in different ways and judge if the movie was good or not. It depends on your opinion and sense of taste of things for example I would watch an action movie and depending on my taste and expectations on action movie I would judge if the movie is good or not.

Movie plans

The main theme of our film opening is that there will be a group or also known as a gang of bullies who bully a shy, nerdy boy. Then it goes to far which make the victim of the bully’s commits suicide because of all the struggles he goes through, but he comes back to live as demon but in other word possessed. He then makes it his goal to get revenge on the bullies and those who made fun of him and goes to the extreme as he decides to kill them all one by one.
The main character is Kallam is very believable as he is a class geek who keeps his head in his books and is very shy around the rest of the people in the class who also dislike him for his awkwardness.

Kallam’s main goals were trying to succeed in his exams as a geeky teenage but due to killing himself and coming back his main goal is to get his revenge. Kashif, Ehsham and Farhan are the bullies who have made his life a living hell but regret it all. They soon realize what they have done to Kallam and how his family feels depressed and sad. The bullies also realize the Kallam is back because of the fact one of the bullies die’s a few days later after Kallam’s death. Their main goal turns into to stop Kallam in his track before he succeeds in his goal.

At stake are the bully’s lives and their families feeling the same way as they made Kallams family feel and they try all their best to stop him.

The film takes place in a school and in a graveyard where we take Kallam to make him scared and in the school where we see him getting bullied and outside of the school on the journey home.

We have created 4 interesting characters:

· Ehsham who is the intimidating bully who overshadows Kallam in size and is physically intimidating.

· Kashif who follows the other bullies and acts like one of them trying to be big and powerful but is weak but still bullies Kallam.

· Farhan looks weak and small but is the main bully or gang leader and he may not be intimidating in size but for sure is a fighter.

· Kallam same high as Farhan and not very frightening either, looks nerdy but due to bullying is frighten and flinches a lot around people.

Mood Board

Our key concepts adrenaline rushing, kidnapping, gruesome and physical violence and we have picked these concepts because they relate to the horror genre we are doing and our movie. The mood board shows the concepts and shows what most things people would expect from a horror genre. The mood does show the horror genre straight up to people but the concepts are there but you have to concentrate to understand them for example the two girls on the left hand side of the mood board represents kidnapping.
These are one of our concepts and the words around the pictures shows what most people would expect in a horror movie. There is more key concepts in the movie and you will see that whilst looking at the poster, each concepts is set in a certain place for example back to the kidnapping one, it's in a certain place to represent kidnapping so people can understand it. The lightning represent fright for example lightning scares most people so in a horror movie it would be common so people jump when they hear the sound of it. Lightning is not very common in many horror movies in the modern day but in the 1990's it was and it made people jump at the sound of it because it would normally be random so that's why it is on our mood board.

Genre Research Task

A genre is something that categories a movie so for example scream for would be in the horror genre so this makes it easier for the audience to find and watch because most people have a certain type of genre they like meaning a they would only watch movies in a certain category for example i mainly like action movie so i would look in the action genre and find a movie that relates to something i like.

Advantages
  • it can offer comforting reassurance in an uncontrollable world
  • it offers a set of easily recognisable conventions like a language
  • it was seen as a strategy used by producers to ensure audience identification and reduce the risk of a film failing
  • genre can be seen as a way of working through importance myths and fears
  • genre is not static but is constantly changed over time depending on what audience prefer
Disadvantages
  • We should be understanding how a film text functions in relation to genre, rather than being defined by them
  • we should acknowledge that a genres features will depend on the audience own understanding
The genre for our movie is horror and back in the 1900 the horror genre was famous and popular then any other genre, the first full horror movie was in 1931 which was Dracula. This was a famous movie about vampires and killing poeple which made the audience want more and this created the horror genre.

The reson why our movie is a horror because it will include killing, blood and other horror elements and the reason we picked this genre is because it is a famous genre and there is always one/two movies released every year on horror. Our movie would mostly relate to Childs play because of the killing, violence and the fact no-one suspects the most innocent. our movie will preferably appeal to audience of the age of 15/18 because of these sorts for elements but this age rating and element appeal in most horror movies but be set out in different ways, our one will be set out differently but will include these sort of element.

Codes and convention

The codes of the film opening are mostly technical code because they are mostly designed on computer and edited on computer. There would be some symbolic codes because the character(s) in the opening scenes use body language for example in The Incredibles opening body language is used to shows that the characters are fighting as if there superhero or villains and right at the start you can see what clothing they're wearing which is red which could mean they're evil. Things such as clothing and colour are symbolical code so even if everything is done by computer you can still find symbolic codes.

The openings also shows what genre the movie is for example again The Incredibles it shows animation character and then character in action so this suggest to the audience that the movie is in the action and animation genre. Most movies opening do have logo's either of the companies that produces it or the logo of the movie for example The Incredibles has a movie logo rather then the companies logo on it's opening so when people see this logo they will know what it is related too.

The openings normally show shows the cast info whilst it is playing through the opening. The audience would watch the movie opening and expect to see those kind of things no matter what movie it is, so they would expect to see cast info, who the movie is made and produced by and they would expect the opening to giving a hint of what the movie will be like and what genre it is in.

You can compare it too Iron Man's opening and you'll see thing in common with The Incredibles opening. You will see that both opening contains cast information to tell you who stars in the movie and who is playing which character.
(The first one is Iron Man's open and secound one is The Incredibles)

As you can see both move has cast information in them and most openings do its something everyone would expect from a movie. They both also show things that might happen in the movie or what might be in there for example in Iron Man's opening you see his suit so you will know thats in it and in The Incredibles you will see people fighting as the credits come up. These are the main things audience would expect form a movie opening becuase they are the main and common thing.

Film Openings

Genre of the movie is horror and thriller because the music is dramatic and shows different kind of deaths of people during the title sequences which suggest the movie will contain violence. This title sequence is all made up from computers none of it is done manually using equipment for example the characters and killing is all computer animated. The connotation is that there is a serial killer who kills people and rigs up tramps to kill them too. The key signifier is the sound which is dramatic and evil to build up tension. The sequence tell us that there will be a lot of violence and killings throughout the movie and the expectations are that people will want to see a lot of actions, horror and thrilling scenes during the movie. The audience that is being targeted is teenager/adults because there will be a lot of violence by the looks of the sequence.

Genre of the movie is action mostly and you expect a lot of fight and future sort of weapons and technology, the title is again made up from computer software so its just a technical code. The connotations of the sequence is that it is about action, that he is the hero who protect people villains. The music is a signifier, the music is like tension building and is most likely in the rock category. The title sequence tells us that the movie is mostly about a robotic person who has weapons ass destruction built on him, this would mostly make people think the movie is sci-fi or along those lines. The audience that is being targeted is most likely people 12+ or 12- like me, kashif face. there is abit of voilence but it does have content that isnt sutible for kids under that age.

This last one is in the animation/action and adventure genre, it is all computerised becuase it is animationm so it is all done with computers so this would also be full of techinical codes. The signifier is most likely be the red backgorund showing evil or anger in some cases even they are heros in the movie so it would make the audience probably think that there is a twist to the movie. The sequences tells us that the movie is about a animated family with superpowers so they are super hero's and i think the same as what the audience might think, that this movie is about an animated family/group who has superpowers and protects people from villians and the target audience would most like be any grouped age but classed as a PG since there is abit of voilence in the movie.

Scream 4 Poster

The genre of this movie is that it is horror and partly comedy but mainly horror, three codes this is would be dark lighting also known as low key lighting, knifes and weapons, masks and clothing. Three conventions of this movie would be blood, violence and murder. The signifier of this movie is that the hero/victims are at front and the killer/villain will be at the back.the villian is called kashif face because he has a kashif face Te donatives level are that there is going to be one serial killer might kill the people who are front but in other words kill the who are in his way. This cover shows the three main characters on the front and the villain is the mask which is Smokey like to say it is a ghost or something that can come from anywhere. This poster also shows the audience that there is a killer and main character who may die or survive but they know there will be violence and blood. This also shows that this movie will be restricted to a certain age group because of the violence it contains.

First post

The genre of our movie is going to be horror and the poeple that is in our group to make it Farhan mohammed, kashif Zaman, Kallum Hussain, Ehsham Javed.
group name: Digital sunsations
The movies genre comes under 4 genres which are drama, action & adventure, science fiction and fantasy but the main two are action & adventure and science fiction. The three things of action & adventure and science fiction would be fights, space and travels to unknown place around the world. The signifiers in the movie poster shows the apes are evil and showsin the city in the background on fire which shows that theres something bad happening. The denotative shows that there is a group of kashif faces that are at war, the one on the cover represtens freedom but in the background it shows a war meaning people are fighting and at war with the apes. The connotative is the apes are showsing there freedom so there will be action and disater in the movie telling from the background. Tey are shows that there is action in the movie and alot of other stuff which will catch the audience eye and make them come and watch it.
